Kochi, Feb 6: The Indian Navy took 25 Somalian pirates into custody and rescued 25 hostages after a stiff battle, 100 miles off Kavarathi near Lakshadweep last night.
Following information about the presence of the pirates in their boat 'Pranthlay 11', the navy's 'INS Thir', which was on patrol duty, tracked them down. However, the piorates continued their journey ignoring the warning from Indian Navy, which forced the Navy to fire warning shots, Naval sources told UNI.
But the pirates, instead of heeding the warning, tried to flee firing back at the Navy personnel. This prompted the latter to resort to effective firing. As the navy personnel gained the upper hand, firing relentlessly, the Somalian pirates were forced to surrender hoisting white flag, the sources said.
Meanwhile, Indian Coast Guard ship 'Samar' also chipped in to assist the naval personnel, the sources added.
Later, the arrested pirates were shifted to Mumbai for further investigation.
This was the second pirate ship tracked down and destroyed by the Indian navy in a week, the sources said. They said there was one more ship, 'Pranthaly 12', preparing to attack ships in the Indian ocean.
